COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the first of three courses in the Mobile App Development with MIT App Inventor series. Course 1 lays the foundation: learners are introduced to app development concepts, get MIT App Inventor set up and explored, build their very first working app, and then move into building a full multi-screen, interactive, speaking app, complete with sound, Text-to-Speech, screen navigation, and a custom-branded, shareable APK. No prior programming experience is required.

 

 

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Understand what app development is and why it matters.
• Confidently set up, navigate, and use the MIT App Inventor platform.
• Build, save, export, test, and debug simple Android apps.
• Use event-driven programming with image, sound, and Text-to-Speech components.
• Build multi-screen apps and package them into a shareable APK with a custom icon.

 

PREREQUISITES

• No prior programming or App Inventor knowledge required.
• Basic computer skills, and access to a Gmail account.

 

MODULE OUTLINE

MODULE 1 Introduction to App Inventor      🏆 App Inventor Explorer

Learners are introduced to app development and get MIT App Inventor set up, explored, and used to build, save, export, test, and debug their first simple app. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Explain what app development is and identify categories of mobile apps. Set up an MIT App Inventor account and navigate the Designer View and Blocks Editor. Build, save, export, and debug a simple first app.

 

MODULE 2 Getting Started with App Inventor      🏆 App Builder

Learners move from theory into hands-on building: a sound-triggering app (HelloCodi), a four-part Text-to-Speech project (Talk to Me), and finally packaging and sharing a finished, custom-branded app. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Add and configure image and sound components using event-driven programming. Use the Text-to-Speech component to build interactive speaking apps. Add multi-screen navigation to an app. Build an APK, add a custom app icon, and share a finished app with others.

 

COURSE SCHEDULE

• Weeks 1–6: Module 1 — Introduction to App Inventor (Lessons 1–6)
• Weeks 7–12: Module 2 — Getting Started with App Inventor (Lessons 1–6)

 

REQUIRED MATERIALS

• Computer with internet access, Chrome/Safari/Firefox browser.
• A Gmail account for signing in to MIT App Inventor.
• Android or iOS device with the MIT AI2 Companion app installed (recommended for live testing).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

• Quizzes at the end of every lesson to check key concepts.

• A computer that can run MIT App Inventor smoothly in a browser.
